Joseon Dynasty White Porcelain Cylindrical Water Dropper with Underglaze-Red Lotus Bamboo Design

This is a water dropper fired during the late Joseon Dynasty.
The body is cylindrical with a slight curve, resembling a stalk of bamboo complete with nodes near the base.
It features a small spout near the shoulder for pouring water and an opening at the top for filling.
The base shows marks from the refractory stones used to prevent the piece from adhering to the kiln floor during firing.
Designs of bamboo on two sides of the body and a lotus bud at the top are painted using copper-red glaze, over which a transparent glaze has been applied.
Such red designs created with copper glaze were considered particularly rare among painted wares.
In Korea, the water dropper used to pour a small amount of water when grinding ink was counted among the "Four Treasures of the Scholar's Study," and many were crafted with diverse designs reflecting the sentiments of the literati.
Bamboo, with its straight growth and nodes, symbolizes "moderation" and "purity," while its ability to withstand the cold makes it an emblem of enduring vitality.
The lotus, blooming with pristine beauty from muddy waters, symbolizes "purity," "nobility of character," and "prosperity."
It is believed that this piece was used by a scholar who deeply valued such nobility of character.
