Period : Late Goryeo Dynasty - Early Joseon Dynasty, Korea / 14C
Size : H14.4cm W9.9cm
A buncheong ware jar produced between the late Goryeo and Joseon dynasties.
It features the Yuhuchun (pear-shaped vase) form, characterized by a swelling body, a slender neck, and a flared rim.
A white slip is applied over the brownish clay, and linear patterns are created by scraping away the slip from the shoulder and lower body.
The body is decorated with an iron-painted design of two fish swimming leisurely.
This distinctive fish motif symbolizes rising to success within the royal court of the Korean Peninsula.
A slightly bluish, semi-translucent glaze is applied over the surface; variations in the glaze's thickness accentuate the tonal nuances of the white slip beneath.
The foot features a thick, ring-shaped foot, revealing the unglazed clay.
The interior of the foot is roughly trimmed, likely a measure to prevent the vessel from bursting during firing.
While the buncheong ware itself is modest in nature, the bold depiction of fish against the smooth surface creates a striking and dynamic visual effect.
The area around the rim that looks like a chip is a mark from the firing process. It is in good condition with a moist luster overall.
