Goryeo Celadon Water Dropper in the form of a Toad

This is a celadon water dropper fired during the Goryeo Dynasty.
A water dropper is a vessel used to hold the small amount of water needed for grinding ink in calligraphy.
On the Korean Peninsula, these objects evolved as one of the "Four Treasures of the Scholar's Study," and a wide variety of shapes favored by literati were created.
This particular piece is modeled after a toad, a motif symbolizing the prosperity of one's descendants.
It is relatively large for a water dropper; the creature is depicted in a seated posture with its front legs raised and hind legs bent.
It has an endearing face with bulging eyes, and a spout for pouring water is located at the tip of its mouth.
The back is covered in numerous warts and floral decorations, with a filling hole located in the center.
The overall celadon glaze has a yellowish hue, and fine crackle glazepatterns follow the contours of the form.
The bottom is unglazed, featuring four supports that hold up the body.
Small stone marks are also present, serving to prevent the piece from adhering to the kiln during firing.
As an excavated piece, it shows some overall discoloration and glaze devitrification (clouding), but this texture creates an appealing atmosphere reminiscent of a toad's natural skin.

A small piece of the floral ornamentation on the back is missing.
The crack visible near the hind legs occurred during the molding and firing process; it is not damage sustained later.
As this is an excavated piece, it shows signs of age overall, yet it retains its luster.
Additionally, a scent of old earth can be detected when held close to the nose.
