This ocher celadon bottle was fired at the Ge Ware during the Southern Song Dynasty.
The rounded body narrows slightly at the neck before flaring out towards the mouth.
The neck is decorated with band-like bulges at the top and bottom, with two cylindrical ear between them.
This type of decoration has been common since around the Song Dynasty in China.
The Ge Kiln is said to have been opened by the older brother of two master craftsmen from the Longquan Kiln, and is famous for its white celadon.
Blue-green celadon was also produced in large quantities, and those fired using the oxidation firing method, like this piece, exhibit a distinctive ochre-gray color.
The surface has fine crackle-glazed that develops over time rather than just during the firing process.
It is said that parts of the Ge Ware were Guan Ware, and the base has a thin layer of iron-rich clay exposed, reminiscent of the Southern Song Guan Ware.
The size of the body and the shape and placement of the ears are all well balanced, giving the piece a sense of dignity as one of the five famous kilns of the Song dynasty.
