Southern Song Dynasty Guan ware Celadon Censer with Fish Handle

This is a celadon censer fired in the Southern Song Guan ware.
It has a high bottom, a bulging body, and a short neck.
Celadon censer from this period were mostly neckless with wide mouths, so this one with a neck and small mouth is rare.
The two fish handles are attached so that they connect the body to the mouth.
These fish handles are also flat with sharp edges, a shape that is rarely seen elsewhere, and they match very well with the linear shape of the vessel.
The black clay unique to Guan ware has been carefully formed, and the glaze applied firmly gives it a solid weight when you pick it up.
The celadon glaze is a gray-blue color, and the surface has large crazing, a glaze unique to Guan ware.
When magnified, it has a very fine, uniform granular texture and shines beautifully.
Although the base is thin at about 1.5 mm, there are no scratches and it feels excellent to the touch with your fingers.
Ceramic fish handles censers were popular during the Song dynasty and were introduced to Japan, where they were used by the imperial family, nobles, and samurai to enjoy their fragrance.
Fish handle censers are a representative form of Southern Song celadon and are an item that everyone would want to own, but there are very few examples in good condition, and it is rare to find one that has survived in such a beautiful condition as this one.
