A celadon water dropper fired in the late Joseon dynasty.
Water droppers were prized as one of the four treasures of stationery in Korea, and were used to pour small amounts of water onto an inkstone when writing calligraphy.
Many intricate shapes are made with a wide variety of designs that offer a high degree of freedom, but this piece has a simple cylindrical shape that allows you to appreciate the beauty of white porcelain.
The body is a low cylinder with a curved, tubular spout attached to the side.
There is a water inlet at the top.
One side of the base sunk during firing, making the whole piece slanted, but this actually gives movement to the simple shape.
This piece has been handed down as a traditional item, and the person who used it may have liked this distortion.
The grayish-blue white porcelain glaze is viscous, and the small glaze holes give it a rugged feel, creating an even better atmosphere.
It is an heirloom. There is a chip on the top edge that appears to have occurred during firing. It is in good condition with a moist luster overall.
