Southern Song Dynasty Guan ware Celadon Small Tea Bowl
Southern Song Dynasty Guan ware Celadon Small Tea Bowl
Period : Southern Song dynasty,China(1127 - 1279) / 12C
Size : H4.5cm W10.6cm
A celadon tea bowl made at the Southern Song Guan ware.
As is typical of Southern Song Guan ware, the rim is thin and thickens towards the bottom.
It has a small base, curves at the waist, and a wide mouth.
It is smaller and shallower than an ordinary tea bowl, and may have been a ceremonial vessel.
It was probably used for pouring sake or serving food.
The celadon glaze that covers the entire bowl is a deep color, and the curved surface is finely crackled and has a moist luster.
Celadon from the Southern Song Guan ware is made with a thin bottom, but the glaze drips and pools around the base, making it about 7mm thick.
If it drips down to the bottom, it will stick to the kiln, so many are damaged and discarded, but it is very rare to see one preserved in such good condition.
The thin rim and thick, jade-like bottom make this a unique item not often seen in other Southern Song official kilns.
There is no conspicuous flaws.Although the surface is slightly aged, it has a good luster. The white marks on the bottom are from removing it from the kiln and are not a defect.
