Goryeo Celadon Oil Pot with Carved Lotus Design
Goryeo Celadon Oil Pot with Carved Lotus Design
Period : Mid Goryeo Dynasty,Korea(918 - 1392) / 12-13C
Size : H5.3cm W10cm
This is a celadon oil pot fired during the Goryeo period.
It is short, with a tapered oval body that widens out when viewed from the side, and a sharp mouth that gives it a neat impression.
The lotus flower carved into relief on the wide top surface has 12 overlapping petals centered around the mouth, with countless veins expressing the texture of the flower.
Around it is arabesque pattern carved in intaglio, filling in the blank space on the surface and highlighting the lotus flower.
The bottom is recessed in the centre, with three evenly spaced marks from the fireproof clay, and the celadon glaze applied all over is finely crackle-glazed.
This is a particularly well-finished piece among Goryeo celadons, with a very well-balanced shape and vivid celadon glaze with little dullness.
There is no conspicuous flaws. The glaze on the waist has faded a little., but overall it is luster and in good condition.
