Seto ware Iron Glaze Jar
Seto ware Iron Glaze Jar
Period : Early Edo Period(1603 – 1868),Japan / 17C
Size : H14.2cm W16.7cm
This is a Seto ware vase fired in the early Edo period.
Judging from the base and the way the glaze was applied, it is thought to be an item from Oroshi kiln, one of the Seto kilns located in what is now Toki City, Gifu Prefecture.
It has a bulging, round body and a high mouth.
The iron glaze applied from the mouth to the waist is a deep brown color with brown spots.
The glaze drips around the four lines on the waist create a pattern.
The inside is almost unglazed. A different, low-gloss brown glaze is applied thinly from the base to the waist to finish it off.
It is a very simple jar, but the pattern created by the glaze drips and the glossy finish at the base give it a unique and interesting texture.
There are two places on the mouth that appear to be silver repairs. There are some medium-sized chips on the bottom.Although the surface is slightly aged, it has a good luster. However, the glaze does have some small scratches.
