Old Bizen ware Jar
Old Bizen ware Jar
Period : Late Kamakura Period - Early Muromachi Period,Japan / 14C
Size : H24.8cm W22.5cm
This is a Bizen ware jar, fired between the end of the Kamakura period and the early Muromachi period.
It has a typical jar shape with rounded shoulders with Potter's wheel marks and a edged mouth.
Ash has been sprinkled around the mouth and shoulders, giving them a white color.
The body is roughly made and has bumps and grooves, and a kiln mark-like mark has been made with a spatula.
As the clay is mixed with pebbles, there are traces of large and small stones having been splashed here and there, and the burnt scarlet color and charring create an imposing sight.
Due to the nature of the clay, there are small scratches on the bottom and mouth caused during firing, but nothing major.
There is a crack at the base of the neck, but this is also a scratch caused during firing and does not reach the inside.
There are no signs of repairs and the overall condition is good.
As this is an antique unglazed item, please be careful when filling it with water.
