Goryeo Celadon Cylindrical Tea Bowl with Bamboo Chrysanthemum Design

A celadon tea bowl made during the Goryeo period.
It has a cylindrical shape and is thought to have originally been a bowl for drinking medicinal water in Korea.
Cylindrical bowls have narrow openings that prevent heat from escaping, so they were used in winter tea rooms during the Muromachi period in Japan.
The entire surface of the vessel is engraved with a bamboo pattern, and a chrysanthemum pattern is placed in the center of the body.
This chrysanthemum flower is made using a technique where decorations are pasted on afterwards, and the petals are made using white mud, which is different from womb clay.
Therefore, the petals with transparent glaze stand out beautifully in white.
The stamens are dyed red with cinnabar, a copper pigment, and then carefully expressed with black inlay.
The leaves around the flowers are detailed down to the veins and are very three-dimensional.
The glaze is a bright gray-blue celadon glaze from the middle to late Goryeo period, with a thick glassy texture and a clear crackle-glazed finish.
The glaze accumulates in the gaps and knots of the bamboo, creating a stunning three-dimensional effect due to the shading.
Goryeo celadon with this type of design, which is entirely carved and decorated with flowers, is very rare, especially cylindrical bowls.

The bottom appears to be uneven and missing, but this is probably a scratch from firing or an old one.
There is a scratch around the waist.
Although the surface is slightly aged, it has a good luster.
