Joseon Dynasty Buncheong Ware Flat Jar with Fish Design
Joseon Dynasty Buncheong Ware Flat Jar with Fish Design
Period : Joseon Dynasty(1392 - 1897),Korea / 15-16C
Size : H12.5cm W11.5cm
A porcelain flat jar made in the vicinity of Mt. Gyeryongsan during the Joseon Dynasty.
The flat jar is a shape that was introduced from China, and was also made in the Buncheong Ware of the Joseon Dynasty.
Vessels from the Goryeo and Yi dynasties of the Korean peninsula, such as this one, are particularly noteworthy for their distinctive shape, and are decorated with patterns that take advantage of their flat, wide surface area.
White mud is poured over dark brown soil, the white mud is carved to create patterns, and a transparent glaze is applied over the top.
The two fish depicted on the two sides are a traditional pattern on ceramics from the Joseon Dynasty.
There are two dragon ears on the shoulders that follow the curves, accentuating the smooth shape.
The flat jar itself is a very rare item with very few examples remaining.
There are some areas where the White slip has been removed from the ears and the surface of the vessel. Many of the other scratches are from firing. Although the surface is slightly aged, it has a good luster.
