Goryeo Celadon Cylindrical Tea Bowl with Inlaid Chrysanthemum Design
Goryeo Celadon Cylindrical Tea Bowl with Inlaid Chrysanthemum Design
Period : Goryeo Dynasty,Korea(918 - 1392)
Size : H7.6cm W6.8cm
A celadon tea bowl made in the Goryeo Dynasty.
Its shape is similar to that of a Japanese teacup, and it is thought that it was originally a bowl for drinking medicine in Korea.
In Japan, during the Muromachi period (1336-1573), when wabi-cha was in its infancy, cylindrical tea bowls were used in tea rooms in the winter because of their narrow openings and the fact that heat did not easily escape.
A chrysanthemum pattern surrounded by three circles is inlaid on the body, and rare cinnabar is used in the center of the flower.
The arrangement of odd numbers is a design unique to the Korean Peninsula.
There is a thunder pattern around the rim of the mouth, and a lotus petal pattern at the bottom.
The arabesque pattern fills the gaps in the body, creating a luxurious inlay that fills the entire vessel.
The bottom is a thin ring bottom, and three traces of stone nail marks are left.
The glaze is a somewhat bright gray-blue celadon glaze similar to that of the late Goryeo Dynasty.
Cylindrical tea bowls are rare, but they are one of the shapes that collectors of Goryeo celadon want to obtain.
There is peeling of the glaze during firing. It has good luster throughout and is in good condition.
