Southern Song Dynasty Ge ware Celadon Bottle with Ring Handles
Southern Song Dynasty Ge ware Celadon Bottle with Ring Handles
Period : Southern Song dynasty,China(1127 - 1279) / 12-13C
Size : H15.9cm W9.6cm
This celadon vase was made in the Ge ware at the end of the Southern Song dynasty.
It has a bulging body, a textured neck, and a trumpet-shaped opening.
The neck has ears with loops through them, which was originally made to imitate bronze ware.
However, a bronze ware shape with the loops separated would be prone to cracking, and would be difficult to reproduce in ceramics, so the vase was simplified and connected to the body.
The bottom has a very thin foldover, similar to the construction of Southern Song Guan ware.
The glaze applied to the entire inside and outside is a glossy pale blue, and is marked all over with large crackle glazes unique to Ge ware.
The crackle glaze is a vivid vermilion color, and it is thought that this is not just the result of soil seeping through, but also the result of a technique of rubbing in powdered red paint.
The crisp vermilion crackle glaze, which contrasts with the refreshing light blue glaze surface, creates a unique and powerful scene.
There are several chips on the bottom. There are a few other very small chips visible, but most are scratches from the firing process. It has good luster throughout and is in good condition.
