Goryeo Celadon Sutra Case with Pagoda Design
Goryeo Celadon Sutra Case with Pagoda Design
Period : Mid Goryeo Dynasty,Korea(918 - 1392) / 11-12C
Size : H25.9cm W8.9cm
This celadon sutra case was made in the mid-Goryeo dynasty.
It is modeled after a five-story pagoda and is decorated with a lotus bud at the top.
The base is finely carved with lotus petal patterns, and the roof of the first tier is also decorated with patterns.
The ornament is hollow on the inside, but it is thought to have been used as a sutra tube to hold rolled sutras.
When we think of sutra tubes, we tend to think of them as objects to put sutras in and bury, but this item is thought to have been used for offering sutras at ceremonies and other occasions.
Not many Goryeo celadon sutra tubes were made, making them extremely rare items.
This item is an excavated item and has discoloration due to soil soaking into the entire piece.
The glaze surface has deteriorated but is in good condition for an excavated item and has a slight shine overall.
There is a crack around the base of the second tier from the top of the tower and there are traces of repair.
There are also chips around the crack, revealing exposed soil in some places.
There is a crack in the corner of the inner base due to firing or the passage of time, which has been filled with white glaze.
